6-A Ancestors of Elsie (Mapes) Cartwright

Samuel Mapes, great grandfather of Elsie (Mapes) Cartwright, was born in Southold, Long Island, and was probably a descendant of Thomas Mapes (1628-1687) who was in Southold, L. I. in 1657 and probably earlier. Thomas Mapes came to New Haven in 1638 from England and in 1639 or 1640 moved to Southold with others who purchased land from the Indians. Samuel Mapes was born Feb. 14, 1735 and died at Howell's N.Y. on February 6, 1820. Both he and his son, Smith Mapes, were signers of the Revolutionary Pledge in 1775 (Calendar of Historical Manuscripts, War of the Revolution, Secretary of State, Vol. I (1868) Page 13. History of Orange County, N.Y. (Rutenber and Clark) 1881, Pages 67-68). Both also served as privates in the 2nd (South End) Regiment, Ulster County, New York Militia, under Col. James McClaghry, during the Revolutionary War (N.Y. in the Revolution as Colony and State. Page 209). Other references: D.A.R. Lineage Books 100-240, 137-162, and 140-61. Samuel Mapes married Mary Smith, who was born April 8, 1739 and who died Jan. 20, 1827.

Smith Mapes (Samuel*l) grandfather of Elsie (Mapes) Cartwright, was born at Howell's N.Y. Dec. 31, 1756 and died May 10, 1830. He was married at Goshen, N.Y. Feb. 10, 1779 to Rachel McKnight (b. March 6, 1764, d. May 20, 1833). As above noted, Smith Mapes and his father, Samuel Mapes, were both soldiers in the Revolutionary War and signers of the Revolutionary Pledge.
