Leona D. Cartwright, 87, of Gold Hill, died Monday (July 26, 1999) — at Medford Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

She was born Leona Hemenway on Sept. 22, 1911, in Cadott, Wisc., a daughter of Bernard and Nellie (Green) Hemenway.

On July 25, 1936, in Rockford, Ill., she married Edmund Lysle Cartwright, who died in 1979.
Mrs. Cartwright was a telephone operator.

She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of Oregon and served on — the Rogue Valley Medical Center Auxiliary for two years.

Mrs. Cartwright enjoyed traveling and flower gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Richard D., and Peter L., both Rocky Point; a daughter, Susan Cox-Smith, Gold Hill; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A daughter, Jean Marie Spangler, died in 1998. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers and a grandson.
